Frequently Asked Questions
What is lanolin and where does it come from?
Lanolin is a natural wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing sheep. It is recovered from sheep’s wool during the wool-scouring process and then purified and refined. S4P uses only high-grade refined lanolin with virtually no smell and minimal impurities.
Is lanolin safe to use around water and marine environments?
Yes. S4P lanolin products contain no petroleum-based ingredients, making them 100% non-toxic, eco-friendly and biodegradable. They are widely used in marine, aquaculture and agriculture where product toxicity would be dangerous to people and wildlife.
How long does the protection last?
Under normal conditions, S4P lanolin provides long-lasting protection — often up to 12 months in standard environments. In highly corrosive or marine environments, we recommend reapplying annually or as required. The product is self-healing, meaning minor scratches and abrasions to the coating will flow and reseal automatically.
Is it resistant to power washing?
Yes. S4P lanolin products are resistant to power washing up to 3,000 psi, as well as resistant to acid, alkali and saltwater environments.
Is it electrically safe?
Yes. S4P lanolin is non-conductive up to 70,000 volts, making it ideal for protecting electrical connections, wiring looms and connectors in marine and agricultural equipment.
Can it be used on rubber as well as metal?
Yes. Lanolin nourishes rubber to prevent it from cracking and going brittle. It is suitable for rubber seals, hoses, bushings and other rubber components, as well as metal, electrical and moving parts.
Will it smell of sheep?
No. S4P uses a highly refined form of lanolin which has virtually no odour.
How is it applied?
S4P products are available as a grease (applied by brush, cloth or grease gun) and as a spray liquid (applied by spray bottle or pressure sprayer). For large-scale commercial use, commercial clients can use pressure sprayers to cover large areas quickly and efficiently. See our Application Guide for full instructions.
Is it suitable for commercial and industrial use?
Absolutely. S4P products are used across marine, agriculture, ground care, aquaculture and industrial sectors. They are designed for demanding commercial environments where reliable, long-lasting corrosion protection is essential.
